Sisters of the Holy Angels

Our History and Identity

History

The Sisters of the Holy Angels were founded in 1903 in Sri Lanka by Bishop Joseph Van Reeth, S.J. The Sisters dedicate their lives to prayer, education, catechesis, and compassionate service to the poor and the vulnerable, bringing hope and the light of Christ wherever they serve. During his visits to the Belgian missions in India, Bishop Van Reeth was deeply inspired by the faith and richness of the local people and recognized the value of indigenous traditions in evangelization. From this inspiration, he envisioned an institute that would unite Christian faith with local values — the Daughters of the Soil. Thus began a congregation radiant with missionary zeal and deeply rooted in faith, living under the loving protection of the Holy Angels. Today, the Sisters continue to carry forward the legacy of Bishop Van Reeth with Humility, Simplicity, and love.
